Parem. Decreixem.

The COP 27 will be held soon, sponsored by the main plastic distributor in the world, a statement of contradictions, unacceptable to these mayors. What is even more surprising, considering the last summer and the floods in Pakistan and the USA, is the ease with which an increase in temperatures of at least 2 degrees is expected. The reasoning is that clearly, taking into account the expected global growth, we cannot realistically expect a sufficient decrease in emissions. The dominant rhetoric continues to speak of growth as a physical phenomenon, instead of a fact resulting from the implemented economic, social and political model. It is clear that in the system in which we live, the South is bound to grow and continue to be a colony of the North, which does real wonders in terms of the make-up of emissions.
In this environment of absolute lack of urgency, and of the feeling that we live more in a monoverse of Meta, instead of a real pluriverse, where the definitions of prosperity and development are understood as subjective and therefore must form part of the internal debate of people and their communities, not imposed by technocrats with dubious motivations.
Although these institutions do not take the gauntlet to the pluriverse of the real world and the options of degrowth or postgrowth, we hear it more and more, and Tv3 has no problem inviting and giving space and you have the great Antonio Turiel or Santiago Nino Becerra to talk of a sold-out model and talk of decline. And I wouldn't be surprised if the first openly decrecentist country was from the south, and that it was a Mediterranean country like ours.
The Italian author Franco Cassano, in his book "Thinking of the South", values the wide range of models of life in the south, its still resistant celebration of doing little by little, knowing how to live, and the consolidation of a place criticized in all economic forums, but desperately sought after to go on holiday. And it's from the north, like the Germans, they work all year to enjoy a few weeks in the Mediterranean paradise.
Although some speculators and low-level politicians do not understand it, our Mediterranean is much more than the sun, the beach and tapas. The tourist comes, in a kind of structural contradiction, to seek culture and wisdom to live, in a complex but precious environment, as it condenses one of the richest landscapes, gastronomy, art and leisure in the world.
Our territory, and in general the South, is threatened by an economic model that only knows how to expand production, with an ideological arsenal of irreversibility and obligation. When it seems that building on the Costa Brava is an act of legal vandalism, some who want to disguise it a little set out to create large renewable installations in the sea, in the mountains, and the little that is left to anthropotize. The ecological community has organized itself well, but it is overwhelmed, the flurry of projects is like a new season of fires, and as if they were firefighters, they have to live accepting that some landscapes will fall. Little by little we are cornered, and in a short time there won't even be a horizon left to colonize.
Faced with this, the renewable energy yes but it is not raised as the flag of the decade. Of course, the transition must be decentralized, democratic, decrecent... but are we doing it? how will we do it? who will pay it? how much do we want will we continue to externalize the ecological consequences of our excessive consumption, while we have second residences and drive private vehicles, while we get angry about the poor bird killed by a windmill?
Let's stop the nonsense! Degrow! Apply moratoriums where they want to colonize the horizon of the Mediterranean and tear up the posidonia. But, immediately, we take a map, organize ourselves and decide: which Mediterranean we want, and how we will ensure energy, food and water sufficiency.
Let's stop NIMBISM and organize degrowth. Let's take care of the Mediterranean paradise, recover its lack of speed, its wild corners, its magic. Let's not imitate those who don't know how to live, those who work 50 weeks to "live" 2 weeks huddled on the beaches. Some countries want to be the factory of the world, others the tech hub, others want to be the empire of the false so-called liberalism of the masses...
I would like people to see the Mediterranean as a paradise, which has known not to sell itself , who has not followed like an idiot the monkey story of the north. A territory that has decided its future and has taken responsibility for its needs without falling into nationalism or isolation. Let's forget GDP, growth and tourist employment data and work for a Mediterranean that doesn't just think of itself when there are no tourists.
Proud of naps, long and late lunches, of the pine forests... of our music and culture... of our public services and private projects... after all, happy to save what they are and for which they visit us. we teach the world our way of living, one of many in the South!
